Flexibility is usually the “forgotten” element of a person’s workout. Or it is a quick 2 minutes tacked on at the end of the workout. But, like with all things, if you don’t use it, you lose it. If you don’t stretch daily, you become inflexible fairly quickly. And this leads to pain and injury.
One of the challenges today with the sedentary culture that we live in, is knowing how to assess clients for potential musculoskeletal imbalances. These imbalances may lead to pain and injury, inhibiting clients from meeting their goals. Thus, in order to deliver consistent results, not only in post-rehabilitation, but also in preventing possible injury once a client starts a workout program, the Total Wellness Coaching team is trained in corrective exercise.
This starts with a series of movement assessments, watching the functional movement of a client, ascertaining what muscles are overactive (tight) and what muscles are underactive (weak). We then put together a specific stretching and strengthening program unique to the client. We use a combination of stretching techniques, such as: self-myofascial release, static stretching, active-isolated stretching, and dynamic stretching.
Corrective exercise training is as important for the High School athlete who wants to optimize their basketball season without knee or ankle issues as it is for the aging adult who wants to continue activity with little or no stiffness, aches, and pains.
